Chiang Mai, Thailand

Why Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a place that we fell in love with instantly. From the moment we arrived, it felt like home. The slower pace, the warmth of the people, the beauty of the mountains and temples — it's a place we feel deeply connected to.

It holds a very special place in our hearts, and there is nowhere else we could imagine starting our marriage. We can't wait to share our favourite place in the world with the people we love most.

Travel Guide

We've called Chiang Mai home for the past few years and couldn't think of a more special place to celebrate our wedding.

We've put together this guide to help make planning your trip as easy and enjoyable as possible, including our recommendations on where to stay, how to get around and other useful information to help you make the most of your time here.

If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to reach out to either of us. We're always happy to help and would love to make your trip to Chiang Mai as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Where to Stay

If you're deciding where to stay, we'd recommend Nimman first, with the Old Town as our second choice. Both areas are fantastic bases for exploring Chiang Mai, with amazing food, easy transport and plenty to see and do.

Chiang Mai map showing Nimman, Old Town, Hotel Yayee and Heritage House & Garden
Our Top Recommendation
Nimman Chiang Mai
📍

Nimman

If you're deciding where to stay, we'd recommend Nimman first. Set against a beautiful mountain backdrop, it's one of the most vibrant and stylish parts of the city, filled with independent coffee shops, craft stores, restaurants, bars and leafy streets to explore.

At the heart of the neighbourhood is One Nimman, a beautiful courtyard space that regularly hosts markets, events and live music. We'll also be hosting our welcome drinks at the rooftop bar at Hotel Yayee, which is located here.

Hotels we recommend

  • Buri Siri (lovely pool area)
  • Sensai (a beautiful option if you'd like to spend a little more)
  • Hotel Yayee (boutique hotel & our welcome drinks venue)
  • Bed Nimman (affordable hotel, right next to where we are hosting welcome drinks)
Old Town Chiang Mai
🏛️

Old Town

If temples, hidden laneways and historic charm are more your style, we'd recommend staying in the Old Town. This is where you'll find many of the city's most beautiful temples, tucked-away cafés, markets and winding streets.

The famous Sunday Night Market takes place here and is well worth visiting if you're in town for the weekend.

Luxury Hotels

If you're looking for something a little more luxurious, we'd highly recommend any of these:

Melia Chiang Mai

Stunning rooftop bar — perfect for sunset

Anantara Chiang Mai

Elegant riverfront setting

InterContinental Mae Ping

Beautiful city views from the rooftop

Even if you don't stay there, the rooftop bars at Melia and InterContinental are worth a visit for sunset.

🚐

Getting to the Wedding

The wedding venue, Heritage House & Garden, is approximately a 30-minute drive from the city. While there are a few accommodation options closer to the venue, we wouldn't recommend staying there as there is very little nearby — you'll get much more out of your trip by staying in Nimman or the Old Town.

To make things easy, we'll be arranging transportation to and from the wedding venue on the day. Pick-up and drop-off locations will be confirmed closer to the time once we know where guests are staying — so there's no need to worry about getting to or from the venue.

All hotels listed are places we've visited ourselves or have been recommended by friends. There are also fantastic options on Airbnb and Booking.com — if you find somewhere you love, you'll be absolutely fine.

We're also hoping to organise a few informal activities in the days leading up to the wedding, depending on who is in town. We'll create a group chat closer to the time, but ideas include a casual padel tournament, an easy hike to one of our favourite viewpoints, and perhaps an evening out together before the celebrations begin — nothing too wild though, we'll want to save our energy for the dance floor!

Getting Around Chiang Mai

📱

Grab

Our #1 Recommendation

Thailand's equivalent of Uber — reliable, inexpensive and available throughout the city.

Most journeys between Nimman, the Old Town and Riverside cost around 80–200 THB (£2–£5).

January is peak season, so Grab can be a little busier during popular dining times and weekends — worth allowing extra time or scheduling in advance.

🛵

Renting a Scooter

Freedom to Explore

One of the most enjoyable ways to explore Chiang Mai and the surrounding countryside — affordable, widely available and incredibly freeing.

We'd only recommend this if you're already a confident rider.

Good to know: It's worth getting an International Driving Permit (IDP) before travelling — quick and inexpensive to arrange at most UK Post Offices. We're happy to share trusted rental shops and typical prices.
🛺

Tuk Tuks

A fun and iconic way to get around, particularly for shorter journeys. Prices are agreed before setting off — most cost around 80–150 THB.

Not always the cheapest, but part of the Chiang Mai experience and well worth trying at least once.

🚌

Songthaews

You'll see these famous red trucks everywhere. A fun, affordable and very local way to get around — they're part of everyday life in Chiang Mai.

Our Chiang Mai Recommendations

Must Visit

If we had to recommend just one coffee shop in Chiang Mai, this would probably be it. There are a few Roast8ry locations around the city, but the Flagship Store is by far our favourite. Expect exceptional coffee, beautiful latte art and some incredibly creative coffee cocktails. It's a little pricier than most cafés, but absolutely worth visiting.

One of the most unique coffee spots in Chiang Mai. You'll need to climb a fair few stairs to reach it, but the panoramic mountain views and excellent coffee make it more than worth the effort.

One of Chiang Mai's most iconic coffee shops, with a few locations dotted around the city. Each has its own character, but all are known for creative coffee, unique drinks and a minimalist atmosphere.

🌿 Beautiful Spaces

Part café, part cultural centre. Kalm Village is one of our favourite places to wander in the Old Town, with beautiful architecture, art exhibitions and a lovely coffee shop set amongst peaceful gardens.

Located in the Old Town, Weave combines coffee, craftsmanship and design in a beautifully curated space.

Must Visit

A beautiful Japanese-inspired garden café that's worth visiting for the setting alone. There is a small entrance fee, but this is deducted from the cost of your drink, making it well worth the visit for the peaceful atmosphere and stunning surroundings.

Our favourite breakfast spot in Nimman. Great coffee, consistently excellent food and the place we return to most often.

A hidden little gem tucked away in Nimman. If you only order one thing, make it the avocado toast.

Excellent bagels, great coffee and a lovely relaxed atmosphere.

🇹🇭 Thai Favourites

If you're looking for authentic Northern Thai food, this is our number one recommendation. Run by one of the sweetest ladies you'll ever meet, their Khao Soi (Chiang Mai's famous coconut curry noodle soup) is an absolute must-try while you're here.

One of the most popular Thai restaurants in the city, set inside a beautiful traditional teak house. We'd definitely recommend booking ahead as it gets busy.

Simple, authentic Thai food at very affordable prices. A great option if you're looking for delicious local food without spending much.

Probably the best pork skewers we've ever had. A traditional Thai breakfast that's incredibly popular with locals and well worth trying.

A fantastic choice if you're looking for a slightly more special evening out, with a modern take on Thai cuisine in the heart of the Old Town. If you can, reserve a table on the rooftop for beautiful sunset views overlooking the Old Town.

🍔 International Favourites

Our pick for the best burger in Chiang Mai.

Worth the short drive outside the city. Easily our favourite pizza in Chiang Mai.

Authentic Texan barbecue run by a Texan. If you're craving smoked brisket or ribs, this is the place.

🍢 Street Food

One of our favourite places to spend an evening. When the market is on, you'll find a fantastic selection of high-quality street food, live music and a great atmosphere. It's the perfect place to try a little bit of everything while soaking up the lively atmosphere.

🥗 Healthy & Vegetarian

Fresh, healthy lunches and smoothie bowls in Nimman.

Great healthy food without feeling overly “healthy”. A perfect lunch option.

One of the best vegetarian and vegan cafés in Chiang Mai, with fantastic food and a great mission behind the business.

🍰 Sweet Treats

If you have a sweet tooth, don't miss this one. Their cinnamon buns are genuinely some of the best we've ever had.

A self-serve frozen yoghurt spot with a huge selection of toppings. Perfect if you're after something refreshing while exploring the city.

Must Visit

If there's one place we'd recommend for an evening out in Chiang Mai, it's here. Located beside the ancient North Gate, this iconic jazz bar has an incredible atmosphere, fantastic live music and is always buzzing. Grab a drink, find a spot outside and soak up one of Chiang Mai's most memorable nights.

Located in One Nimman, this is a fantastic spot for live music in a relaxed setting. A great place to spend an evening with a drink while enjoying talented local musicians.

A stylish cocktail bar with a sophisticated atmosphere that regularly hosts live jazz evenings. It's a little more premium, but well worth a visit if you're after great cocktails and live music.

🍸 Cocktail Bars

One of our favourite cocktail bars in Chiang Mai. Creative drinks, an artsy atmosphere and a brilliant place to spend an evening in Nimman.

Located in One Nimman, Puravida has a great atmosphere with excellent cocktails and a lively yet relaxed vibe. It's a perfect place to start or finish an evening out.

🌇 Rooftop Bars

Must Visit

Located at the InterContinental Chiang Mai Mae Ping. If you're looking for the best rooftop views in Chiang Mai, this is our top recommendation. We'd suggest booking online in advance and arriving around sunset to enjoy panoramic views across the city.

Located at Meliá Chiang Mai. Another fantastic rooftop bar with beautiful sunset views across the city. A great alternative if Hong's is fully booked.

🍺 Casual Evenings

A great choice if you're looking for a relaxed beer garden atmosphere. It's a popular local spot that's perfect for a casual evening with friends.

A rustic pub overlooking the Old Town from its rooftop terrace. This also happens to be Jamie's rugby club clubhouse, so don't be surprised if you spot a few familiar faces—or even Jamie himself—in some of the photos on the walls!

Hotel Yayee — We'll be hosting our Welcome Drinks here on 29th January, so we'd recommend saving this one for then.

Must Visit

The most iconic temple in Chiang Mai, perched high on the mountains overlooking the city. The views across Chiang Mai are spectacular, and the temple itself is one of the most important in Northern Thailand. We'd recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon when it's a little cooler and quieter.

One of Chiang Mai's most impressive ancient temples, located in the heart of the Old Town. Built over 600 years ago, its towering ruined chedi makes it one of the city's most recognisable landmarks and well worth exploring while wandering through the Old Town.

A beautiful temple renowned for its intricate Lanna architecture and peaceful grounds. Located in the heart of the Old Town, it's an easy stop while exploring the city's historic streets and cafés.

A unique temple decorated with intricate silverwork, showcasing the craftsmanship Northern Thailand is famous for. Please note that, in keeping with local tradition, the main ordination hall is only open to men, but the surrounding temple grounds are open to everyone and are well worth visiting.

🥾 Hikes & Nature

Must Visit

One of our favourite things to do in Chiang Mai. Just a 15-minute drive from Nimman, this beautiful jungle hike takes around 30 minutes and leads to a hidden temple nestled amongst the trees. It genuinely feels like something straight out of Tomb Raider. As this is an active temple, please remember to wear or bring something to cover your shoulders and knees if you'd like to enter.

Located within Chiang Mai University, just 10 minutes from Nimman. A peaceful 2km walk around two reservoirs surrounded by mountains. It's one of our favourite places for a morning or sunset stroll.

🛍️ Markets & Local Culture

Must Visit

If you only visit one market during your stay, make it this one. Chiang Mai is famous for its incredible arts, crafts and local makers, and Jing Jai perfectly captures that creative spirit. Expect beautiful handmade goods, fantastic food and a brilliant atmosphere.

A beautiful courtyard filled with boutique shops, cafés, restaurants and regular markets, often accompanied by live music.

If you're in Chiang Mai on a Sunday, don't miss it. Stretching through the Old Town, it's one of Thailand's best night markets, with fantastic street food, local crafts and live entertainment.

A charming market set amongst rice fields, with a relaxed atmosphere, local food stalls and handmade arts and crafts.

Part cultural centre, part art village. A wonderful place to wander through galleries, workshops and beautifully designed spaces before stopping for a coffee.

☀️ Wellness & Relaxation

Chiang Mai has a huge wellness scene, making it the perfect place to slow down, relax and recharge.

Located right in Nimman, this is a lovely place to spend a relaxed afternoon.

Even if you're not staying at the hotel, you can purchase a day pass and enjoy the beautiful pool area for a small fee.

A more social wellness space featuring a pool, sauna and ice bath. Great if you're after a lively atmosphere close to town.

Another beautiful wellness space approximately 20 minutes from Chiang Mai, offering pools, saunas and a tranquil environment. Day passes are usually around £10.

🐘 Elephant Sanctuaries

Must Visit

One of the most memorable experiences you can have while visiting Northern Thailand. This ethical elephant sanctuary allows you to feed, walk alongside and bathe rescued elephants in their natural environment. We'd recommend the half-day experience, which gives you plenty of time with the elephants and includes transport from Chiang Mai along with lunch. For something extra special, they also offer accommodation, allowing you to wake up with elephants quite literally on your doorstep.

🏔️ Explore Northern Thailand

Northern Thailand is famous for its spectacular mountains, jungle landscapes and scenic drives. If you have a few extra days after the wedding, we'd highly recommend exploring beyond Chiang Mai.

Thailand's highest mountain and one of the country's most beautiful national parks. You can either drive to the summit or choose from several hiking trails through cloud forests and waterfalls.

Must Visit

One of our favourite places in Northern Thailand, located around 1.5 hours from Chiang Mai. Surrounded by dramatic limestone mountains, it's an incredibly peaceful place with some of the best scenery in the region. If you're staying overnight, we'd highly recommend Dara Dao, where you'll wake up to breathtaking mountain views and unforgettable sunsets.

A laid-back mountain town known for its relaxed, bohemian atmosphere. The drive itself is incredibly scenic and is a favourite amongst motorbike riders, although we'd only recommend riding there if you're confident on winding mountain roads.

🚶 Explore the City

Spend a morning wandering through independent coffee shops, boutiques and quiet side streets before stopping for lunch or a drink.

The best way to experience the city's historic heart is simply by wandering. Explore the ancient walls, hidden alleyways, temples, cafés and local shops at your own pace.

Must Play

Our favourite place to play in Chiang Mai. Located right in the city with a beautiful mountain backdrop, it's a fantastic option if you're short on time. The practice range is also one of the best in the city, making it a great place to hit a few balls before or after your round.

One of the best golf courses in Northern Thailand, with immaculate conditions, dramatic mountain views and an enjoyable layout suitable for all abilities.

A spectacular course surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful scenery. A fantastic choice if you're looking to experience one of Northern Thailand's premier golf courses.

A well-maintained course located close to the city, making it a convenient choice if you're short on time.

One of the closest courses to the city centre and a great option for a relaxed round without travelling too far.

💡 Good to Know

Golf in Thailand is a little different from the UK. All golf courses require you to play with a caddie, so it isn't possible to play without one. A tip of around 400 THB per caddie is generally considered the standard minimum and is greatly appreciated. Don't expect lots of technical golf advice—they're there to help with distances, reading putts, finding balls and keeping the round running smoothly. They're a fun part of the golfing experience in Thailand and will always do their best to help.

🚗 Getting There

Most golf courses are between 20–45 minutes from Nimman and the Old Town. The easiest way to get there is by Grab or taxi, although many courses can also arrange transport if booked in advance.
